Orchids

How to care for Orchids

  • Light: Orchids require bright, indirect light. Place them near a south-facing window or under a grow light.

  • Temperature: Most orchids prefer temperatures between 60-80°F (15-27°C).

  • Humidity: Orchids thrive in high humidity. You can increase humidity by placing a tray of water near the plant or using a humidifier.

  • Fertiliser: Orchids require regular fertilisation, but use a specialised orchid fertiliser with a low concentration of nutrients.

  • Watering: Water orchids when the roots are silvery in colour. Submerge the nursery pot in water and allow to soak until the roots are green again.

Reviving and repotting orchids can help bring them back to their former beauty and keep them thriving indoors. Here's how to do it:

  1. Assess the orchid: The first step in reviving and repotting an orchid is to assess its condition. Check for signs of root rot, such as mushy or black roots, and look for any pests or diseases.

  2. Remove the old potting mix: Carefully remove the orchid from its old potting mix. If the roots are tangled, gently separate them with your fingers or a clean pair of scissors.

  3. Trim damaged roots: Trim any damaged roots using a clean pair of scissors or pruning shears. Cut away any black or mushy roots, as they can cause the plant to rot.

  4. Choose a new pot and potting mix: Select a new pot that is slightly larger than the old one, with good drainage holes. Choose a potting mix that is specifically formulated for orchids, as they require a well-draining, aerated mix that is low in nutrients.

  5. Repot the orchid: Place the orchid in the new pot and fill in the gaps with the new potting mix. Make sure to keep the crown of the plant (where the leaves emerge) above the surface of the potting mix.

  6. Water the orchid: Water the orchid thoroughly, allowing the excess water to drain out of the bottom of the pot. Be careful not to overwater, as orchids are susceptible to root rot.

  7. Provide proper care: After repotting, provide your orchid with the proper care to help it thrive indoors.
