Autumn Care
As we embrace the crisp air and falling leaves, it's time to give your houseplants a little extra TLC to prepare them for the cosy months ahead. Here’s your handy guide to keeping your indoor green friends happy and healthy this autumn.
1. Water Less Frequently
With cooler temperatures and shorter days, your plants will slow down their growth. This means they won’t need as much water. Aim to water only when the soil feels dry to a depth of about two inches—this might be every two weeks or so. Check with a simple finger test: if the soil is dry, it’s time for a drink!
2. Maximise Their Light
Autumn sunlight can be a bit elusive, so help your plants make the most of it by moving them closer to a window. Don't worry about the midday sun—it's gentle this time of year and won’t burn your plants.
3. Skip the Feeding
Your plants are entering a period of rest and won’t need extra nutrients. Stop feeding them around October to avoid causing unnecessary stress. They’ll appreciate the break and so will you!
4. Avoid Draughts
Keep your plants away from chilly draughts from doors and windows. They thrive in a stable temperature, so if it’s comfortable for you, it’s perfect for them.
5. Hold Off on Repotting
Since plants are preparing for dormancy, it’s best to hold off on repotting until spring unless absolutely necessary. Repotting during this time can disrupt their rest and hinder root establishment.
6. Bring Outdoor Plants Inside
If you’ve been enjoying the summer with outdoor plants like lemon trees or bird of paradise, it’s time to bring them back inside. However, only those that have been outside for the summer need to come back in—no need to overcrowd your indoor space!
