Anthurium andraeanum ‘Essencia

Anthurium ‘Essencia’ is a striking flowering houseplant with glossy, dark green leaves and unusual, waxy blooms in deep chocolate brown to burgundy-red. Her rich, moody flowers stand out beautifully against the foliage and can last for weeks, bringing a little tropical drama to your home. Anthuriums originate from tropical parts of Central and South America, so she appreciates warmth and humidity.

☀️ Light
Bright, indirect light is best. Too little light can reduce flowering, while strong direct sunshine can scorch the leaves and flowers.

💧 Watering
Water when the top couple of centimetres of compost begin to dry. Keep the compost lightly moist but never waterlogged, and always let excess water drain away. Water less frequently during winter.

🌡️ Temperature & Humidity
Around 18-27°C is ideal. She enjoys higher humidity, so a bright bathroom or kitchen can work well if there's enough light. Keep her away from cold draughts.

🪴 Potting
Use a loose, airy mix that allows water to drain freely, such as peat-free compost mixed with orchid bark and perlite. Ensure the pot has drainage holes.

✂️ Pruning
Remove faded flowers and yellow leaves by cutting them off near the base with clean scissors.

🌿 Growing Tips
With good light and warmth, she can flower repeatedly throughout the year. Wipe the leaves occasionally and feed lightly during spring and summer with a suitable houseplant fertiliser.

🐾 Not Pet Friendly
Anthuriums contain calcium oxalates and are toxic to cats and dogs if eaten.
