Begonia maculata ‘Black Forest’ is a striking foliage plant with elongated leaves, contrasting markings and a rich, dramatic look. Like other cane begonias, she grows upright on sturdy stems and can produce clusters of delicate flowers when conditions suit her.
☀️ Light
Bright, indirect light is ideal. A little gentle morning sunshine is fine, but avoid strong direct sunlight, which can scorch her leaves.
💧 Watering
Water when the top couple of centimetres of compost have started to dry. She likes some moisture around her roots but doesn't enjoy being waterlogged. Reduce watering during winter when growth slows.
🌡️ Temperature & Humidity
Keep her warm, ideally around 18-25°C. She appreciates moderate to higher humidity, but good airflow helps prevent fungal problems. Avoid cold draughts.
🪴 Potting
Use a light, free-draining houseplant compost with some perlite. Make sure the pot has drainage holes.
✂️ Pruning
Remove yellow or damaged leaves and trim back overly long stems to encourage a fuller shape. Use clean scissors and prune during the growing season.
🌿 Growing Tips
Rotate her occasionally so she grows evenly towards the light. Stem cuttings can be rooted to grow new plants. Try to avoid leaving water sitting on the leaves for long periods.
🐾 Not Pet Friendly
Begonias are considered toxic to pets if eaten, particularly because of compounds concentrated in the roots.
