Cotyledon ladysmithiensis ‘Variegata’ is a beautiful succulent with chunky, softly textured leaves in shades of green, cream and sometimes pink. Her leaves have a lovely rounded shape and slightly furry appearance, giving her plenty of character. Like most succulents, she’s happiest with lots of light and not too much water.
☀️ Light
Give her plenty of bright light. She can enjoy several hours of direct sunshine, particularly gentle morning or evening sun. A very bright windowsill is ideal. If she doesn't get enough light, she may become stretched and lose her compact shape.
💧 Watering
Let the compost dry out completely between waterings. When it's dry, give her a good drink and allow the excess water to drain away. During autumn and winter, water much less frequently as growth slows. Overwatering is one of the quickest ways to cause problems with succulents.
🌡️ Temperature & Humidity
Normal household temperatures are fine, ideally around 15–25°C. She doesn't need high humidity and will actually prefer good airflow and a relatively dry environment. Protect her from frost and very cold temperatures.
🪴 Potting
Use a free-draining cactus and succulent compost, ideally with plenty of grit, perlite or pumice. A pot with drainage holes is essential. Avoid oversized pots, as they can hold onto moisture for too long.
✂️ Pruning
Remove any dead or damaged leaves as needed. You can also trim back leggy growth to encourage a more compact shape.
🌿 Growing Tips
The key to keeping her happy is lots of light and a light touch with the watering can. Her variegated foliage may be slower growing than a fully green plant, so don't worry if she takes her time.
🐾 Not Pet Friendly
Cotyledon species are considered toxic if eaten, so keep her away from pets and children.
