Ficus lyrata ‘Bambino’ is a compact version of the much-loved fiddle-leaf fig, with glossy, deep green leaves shaped like little violins and prominent veining. She brings all the bold foliage of her larger relative in a smaller, more manageable size, making her a lovely choice for shelves, side tables or a bright corner. Ficus lyrata originates from tropical West Africa, where she grows into a much larger tree.
☀️ Light
Bright, indirect light is ideal. She can enjoy a little gentle morning sunshine, but avoid strong direct sun, which can scorch her leaves. A bright spot near a window will help her grow well and keep her foliage looking lush.
💧 Watering
Water when the top couple of inches of compost feel dry. Give her a thorough drink, allowing excess water to drain away, and never leave her sitting in water. She dislikes being overwatered, so allow the compost to dry slightly between waterings. Reduce watering during autumn and winter when growth slows.
🌡️ Temperature & Humidity
Around 18-27°C is ideal. She will be happy in average household humidity, but appreciates a little extra humidity if the air is particularly dry. Keep her away from cold draughts, radiators and sudden changes in temperature
🪴 Potting
Use a free-draining houseplant compost with added perlite or orchid bark to improve airflow around the roots. Choose a pot with drainage holes and only move her into a slightly larger pot when she becomes rootbound.
✂️ Pruning
Remove any yellow or damaged leaves with clean scissors. If she becomes too tall or you’d like to encourage a fuller shape, you can prune the stem during spring or summer. Take care when pruning, as her milky sap can irritate skin.
🌿 Growing Tips
Ficus ‘Bambino’ is a relatively slow-growing plant, so don’t worry if she takes her time putting out new leaves. Rotate her occasionally so she grows evenly towards the light, and wipe her leaves with a damp cloth to keep them clean and glossy.
🐾 Not Pet Friendly
Ficus lyrata is toxic to cats and dogs if eaten. Her milky sap can also cause skin irritation, so keep her out of reach of curious pets and handle with care.
