Consolea rubescens, commonly known as the Road Kill Cactus, is an unusual paddle cactus loved for its flattened blue-green pads and sculptural, slightly windswept appearance. Native to the Caribbean, this striking cactus develops an almost stacked, abstract shape as it grows, giving it the crumpled look that earned its memorable nickname. It makes a brilliant statement plant for bright interiors and cactus collections.
☀️- She thrives in bright light and enjoys several hours of direct sun each day. A sunny windowsill or bright conservatory is ideal for maintaining compact, healthy growth.
💧- Allow the soil to dry out completely between waterings. Water sparingly throughout spring and summer, then reduce watering significantly in winter when growth slows. Avoid leaving the plant sitting in wet compost, as this can quickly lead to rot.
🌡️- Ideal temperatures are 18-30°C. She enjoys warm, dry conditions and should be protected from frost and cold damp environments.
🪴- Use a very free-draining cactus or succulent compost with added grit or sand to improve drainage. Repot only when necessary, ideally during spring.
✂️- Minimal maintenance required. Handle carefully when repotting, as the pads can bruise or snap if knocked.
🐾- Not pet friendly.
