Oxalis triangularis | Purple Shamrock

Oxalis triangularis is a fun little plant with triangular purple leaves that open during the day and fold up at night. She can also produce delicate pale pink or white flowers. She grows from underground rhizomes and may occasionally die back before returning with fresh growth.

☀️ Light
Bright, indirect light is ideal, and a little gentle sunshine can help maintain her rich purple colour. Avoid strong midday sun, especially through glass.

💧 Watering
While she is actively growing, water when the top couple of centimetres of compost begin to dry. Keep the compost lightly moist but not waterlogged. If the plant dies back and enters dormancy, reduce watering substantially and avoid keeping the dormant rhizomes wet.

🌡️ Temperature & Humidity
Around 16-24°C is ideal. Average household humidity is usually fine. Keep her away from cold draughts and extremes of temperature.

🪴 Potting
Use a free-draining houseplant compost with some added perlite. A pot with drainage holes is important to prevent the rhizomes from rotting.

✂️ Pruning
Remove faded flowers and yellow or dying leaves. If she dies back naturally, tidy away the old foliage and allow her time to rest.

🌿 Growing Tips
Don't panic if she loses all her leaves for a while. Oxalis can go dormant and regrow from her underground rhizomes. Resume normal watering when new shoots appear.

🐾 Not Pet Friendly
Oxalis contains soluble oxalates and can be harmful to cats and dogs if eaten, particularly in larger quantities.
