Peperomia Prostrata | String of Turtles

Peperomia prostrata, commonly known as String of Turtles, is a delicate trailing houseplant loved for its tiny rounded leaves patterned like miniature turtle shells. Native to the rainforests of Brazil, this compact Peperomia naturally grows along the forest floor and over bark in its natural habitat, forming soft cascading stems that look beautiful spilling from shelves, small pots, or hanging planters.

It stays fairly slow-growing and compact, which makes it perfect for smaller spaces where you want detail rather than bulk. The intricate leaf pattern is best appreciated up close, where each little “shell” design really stands out.

☀️ Light
Bright, indirect light is best. Avoid strong direct sunshine, which can scorch her small leaves, but don't place her in a very dark corner as this can lead to sparse growth.

💧 Watering
Allow the top half of the compost to dry out before watering thoroughly. Make sure excess water drains away. Her leaves store some moisture, so she prefers being slightly dry to sitting in wet compost.

🌡️ Temperature & Humidity
Around 18-26°C is ideal. She appreciates moderate humidity but can adapt to normal household conditions. Keep away from cold draughts and temperatures below about 15°C.

🪴 Potting
Use a light, airy and free-draining mix, such as houseplant compost with plenty of perlite. A small pot with drainage holes is ideal.

✂️ Pruning
Trim back any damaged or overly long stems if needed. Healthy stem cuttings with nodes can be used to grow new plants.

🌿 Growing Tips
String of Turtles is naturally slow growing, so give her time to fill out. Overwatering is one of the most common problems, especially when the plant is kept in a pot that's too large.
