Syngonium podophyllum ‘Mottled

Syngonium podophyllum ‘Mottled’ is a beautiful tropical houseplant with arrow-shaped leaves covered in soft, mottled shades of green and cream. As she matures, her leaves can become more divided, giving her a different look over time. Originally from tropical regions of Central and South America, she’s a versatile plant that can trail from a shelf or climb a moss pole for a fuller, more upright display.

☀️ Light
Bright, indirect light is ideal for maintaining her mottled colouring and encouraging healthy growth. She can tolerate some gentle morning sunshine, but avoid strong direct sunlight, which can scorch her leaves. Too little light may cause slower growth and less noticeable variegation.

💧 Watering
Water when the top few centimetres of compost have dried out. She likes some moisture but doesn’t enjoy sitting in soggy soil. Water thoroughly and allow excess water to drain away. Reduce watering during autumn and winter when growth naturally slows.

🌡️ Temperature & Humidity
Keep her somewhere warm, ideally around 18–27°C. She enjoys higher humidity, especially when producing new leaves, but average household humidity is usually fine if she’s kept away from dry heat. Avoid cold draughts and sudden temperature changes.

🪴 Potting
Use a light, free-draining aroid mix made with peat-free compost or coco coir, orchid bark and perlite. Choose a pot with drainage holes to help prevent waterlogged roots. A moss pole or other support can encourage larger leaves and more mature growth.

✂️ Pruning
Trim back long or leggy stems to encourage bushier growth and maintain her shape. Remove yellow or damaged leaves with clean scissors. Healthy stem cuttings can be propagated to grow new plants.

🌿 Growing Tips
Rotate her regularly so she grows evenly towards the light. Bright, indirect light will help maintain her mottled foliage, while a moss pole can encourage larger, more mature leaves. Wipe the leaves occasionally to remove dust and keep an eye out for common pests such as spider mites and thrips.

🐾 Not Pet Friendly
Syngonium podophyllum contains calcium oxalate crystals and is toxic if eaten, so keep her away from pets and children.
